Ice Jam, Ice Flood

Ice Jam, Ice Flood : Blockage of the water in a river due to an ice barrier, often upstream from a bridge or a narrow passage. A rise in the level of a body of water caused by ice or ice jam. The ice forms on the water surface (ice cover) or on the riverbed (anchor ice). It moves in the form of drift ice floating on the surface either with the water current or moved by the wind. A special kind of ice flood may occur on rivers which (in the northern hemisphere) flow from the south towards the north (e.g. the Red River of the North in North America). In such cases the lower reaches in the north are often still frozen while the thaw has already started in the south. There is nothing that can be done to prevent the resulting floods - apart from constructing dykes
