Equal Degree of Encroachment

Equal Degree of Encroachment : An equal reduction of conveyance for flood flows on each side of a stream. Encroachment lines are used on maps to define the allowable limits of encroachment. The "equal degree of encroachment" for a specified stream reach is determined by evaluating the effects of encroachment on the conveyance of the floodplain along both sides of a stream. (The intent of this principle is to allow an equal decrease in conveyance on each side of a stream. Usually, encroachment lines established using this principle will not be equidistant from their respective sides of the channel)
