B-value

B-value :

A coefficient in the frequency-magnitude relation, log N(M) = a bM, obtained by Gutenberg and Richter (1941; 1949), where M is the earthquake magnitude and N(M) is the number of earthquakes with magnitude greater than or equal to M. Estimated b-values for most seismic zones fall between 0.6 and 1.1, but may be higher in volcanic regions, earthquake swarms and aftershock sequences.
